In 2008, Jennifer Barker traded the misty landscapes of the UK for the sun-drenched shores of Australia, settling into the vibrant coastal life of Bondi. With a keen eye for beauty and a talent for transformation, she opened a successful hair salon, a space that soon became a beloved sanctuary for style and self-care. Jennifer built the interior of the business with recycled fence palings.

Her passion for creating things from recycled objects and renovating furniture was a great hobby and the salon looked amazing……..but then a deeper dream took hold.
In 2022, Jennifer made a bold move to the Sunshine Coast, drawn by the vision of something more profound—a haven of relaxation and restoration. She found her home in the peaceful suburb of Rosemount, just 15 minutes from the coast, where nature’s rhythm set the perfect backdrop for her next venture.

By August 2024, that dream became a reality with the opening of Amaroo Day Spa—a name that means “beautiful place” in Aboriginal. Unlike the many Balinese and Thai-inspired retreats, Amaroo was designed to celebrate the raw beauty and authenticity of Australia. Every element of the spa tells a story of sustainability and local craftsmanship.

Jennifer ensured that her space was built with a recycle-and-reuse philosophy at its core. She sourced furniture from charity shops, not only giving new life to pre-loved pieces but also giving back to the community. Each item was carefully stripped, hand-painted, and restored by her own hands. Recycled timbers thread through the spa’s design, seamlessly blending with nature. Even the interior decorations hold a personal touch, many of them gathered from her own garden.

Beyond the aesthetic, Jennifer’s commitment to supporting local artists and artisans’ shines through. Every product—whether it’s skincare, candles, or jewellery—is handmade, adding a deep layer of authenticity and connection to the space.

What Jennifer has created is more than a spa; it’s an experience, a retreat woven with passion, sustainability, and the spirit of the land. Amaroo is a reflection of her journey—a place where people can step away from the noise of the world and reconnect with themselves in a truly Australian sanctuary.
